Selection Criteria For Diamond Saw Blades

Jun 07, 2023

1. Selection of diamond particle size

When diamond grain size is coarse and single, the blade tip is sharp and the cutting efficiency is high, but the Flexural strength of diamond agglomeration decreases; When the diamond particle size is fine or mixed with coarse and fine particles, the saw blade head has durability but low efficiency. Taking into account the above factors, it is more appropriate to choose a diamond particle size of 50/60 mesh.

2. Selection of diamond distribution concentration

Within a certain range, as the diamond concentration changes from low to high, the sharpness and cutting efficiency of the saw blade gradually decrease, while the service life gradually extends; But if the concentration is too high, the saw blade will become blunt. Using low concentration and coarse particle size will improve efficiency. By utilizing the different functions of each part of the blade during sawing and using different concentrations (i.e. lower concentrations can be used in the middle layer of three or more layers), a middle groove is formed on the blade during the sawing process, which is beneficial for preventing the saw blade from tilting and improving the quality of stone processing.

3. Selection of diamond strength

The strength of diamond is an important indicator to ensure cutting performance. Excessive strength will make the crystal less prone to breakage, and the abrasive particles will be polished during use, resulting in a decrease in sharpness and deteriorating tool performance; When the strength of diamond is insufficient, it is easy to break after being impacted, making it difficult to bear the heavy cutting task. Therefore, the strength should be selected between 130 and 140N.

4. Selection of bonding phase

The performance of a saw blade does not only depend on diamond, but also on the overall performance of a composite material composed of diamond and binder that is properly combined. For soft stone materials such as marble, the mechanical properties of the cutting head are required to be relatively low, and copper based binders can be used. However, copper based binders have low sintering temperature, low strength, hardness, toughness, and low bonding strength with diamonds. When tungsten carbide (WC) is added, WC or W2C is used as the skeleton metal, accompanied by an appropriate amount of cobalt to improve strength, hardness, and bonding properties, and a small amount of low melting point, low hardness metals such as Cu, Sn, Zn are added as bonding phases. The particle size of the main added component should be finer than 200 mesh, and the particle size of the added component should be finer than 300 mesh.

5. Selection of sintering process

With the increase of temperature, the compactness of the matrix increases, and the Flexural strength also increases. And with the extension of the holding time, the Flexural strength of the blank matrix and diamond agglomerates increases first and then decreases. The 120s sintering process at 800 ℃ can be selected to meet the performance requirements.

Selection Criteria For Diamond Saw Blades

When it comes to cutting materials like concrete, granite, marble, and other tough materials, diamond saw blades are the go-to tool for the job. However, selecting the right diamond saw blade for your cutting project can be a daunting task. In this article, we will outline the key selection criteria for diamond saw blades.

1. Material to be cut

The material you intend to cut will greatly influence the type of diamond saw blade to select. Diamond saw blades come in different types and sizes, each designed for specific materials. For example, a blade meant for cutting concrete may not be suitable for cutting marble or granite. Before selecting a diamond saw blade, identify the material to be cut and choose a blade that is specifically designed for that material.

2. Blade size

The size of the blade is also an essential consideration when selecting a diamond saw blade. The size of the blade will determine the depth of cut, and the thickness of the material that can be cut. Large blades are suitable for cutting thicker materials, while smaller blades are better for shallow cuts.

3. Blade quality

The quality of the blade is just as important as the size and type. A high-quality diamond saw blade will last longer and provide a cleaner cut compared to a lower quality blade. Choose a blade made of high-quality materials such as high-density diamonds and the right bonding agent.

4. Wet or dry cutting

There are two primary methods of cutting with diamond saw blades; wet or dry cutting. Wet cutting involves using water to cool the blade as it cuts, reducing friction and heat buildup. Dry cutting, on the other hand, is done without water, which can result in more dust but is suitable for some applications. Consider which method is most appropriate for your cutting job before selecting the blade.

5. RPM rating

The RPM rating of a diamond saw blade refers to the maximum speed the blade can be rotated without causing damage or becoming unsafe. Not all saws have the same RPM capacity, and it is essential to select a blade that is compatible with your saw's RPM rating.

6. Use of blade

The intended use of the blade is also an important consideration when selecting a diamond saw blade. Some blades are better suited for heavy-duty applications, while others are more appropriate for occasional use. Consider how often you will use the blade, the type of materials you will cut, and the blade's expected lifespan when choosing a blade.

7. Cost

Finally, cost is another crucial factor when selecting a diamond saw blade. High-quality blades tend to be more expensive, but they also last longer and provide a better cut. When considering the cost of a blade, balance the upfront cost of the blade with its expected lifespan and cutting performance.

In conclusion, selecting the right diamond saw blade requires considering several factors, including the material to be cut, blade size, quality, wet or dry cutting, RPM rating, use of blade, and cost. By carefully evaluating these factors, you can ensure that your diamond saw blade is up to the task, providing a clean, fast, and efficient cut.
